Winterberry Ilex verticillata

Winterberry is a moderate-sized (5-15 ft tall) shrub in the holly family with attractive bright red fruit during the late fall through the winter. Their fruit make them a popular ornamental shrub, but they are either male or female, so we recommend planting numerous plants within 40 feet of each other to ensure adequate pollination. Not only is their fruit attractive to us, but also to small mammals and more than 48 species of birds who enjoy eating the berries. Pruning in the early spring will increase branching and decrease fruits the following year, but in future years you will have more fruits than if pruning never occurred.
