White Spruce
Picea glauca
White spruce is a hardy long-lived native conifer with many important uses. It grows on a wide range of soil types and can occupy various ecological roles in its range. Due to its plasticity they are good at maintaining soil stability and watershed values. It is an excellent source of shelter and cover to birds and mammals and is used in winter months as forage. The new growth or tips of the tree are edible and high in vitamin C, often used to make citrusy-flavored syrups, vinegars, or jams. Historically, this tree provided shelter and fuel for both indigenous peoples and settlers of the northern forests. They are now commonly planted as ornamentals or shelterbelts.
