River Birch
Betula nigra
River birch is a beautiful hardwood with numerous ecological benefits and uses. It is a wide-ranging tree throughout the eastern half of the US and is tolerant of highly acidic and wet conditions. It is an excellent choice for conservation projects along stream banks, helping prevent erosion, protecting water quality, and providing a quality source of food and habitat for aquatic and terrestrial wildlife. Turkey, ruffed grouse, and many important insect species use river birch for food and shelter. Additionally, its sap can be used to make a maple syrup-like sweetener, and it is a prized specimen plant due to its attractive peeling bark.
