Quaking Aspen Populus tremuloides

Quaking aspen is a fast-growing, short-lived, pioneer species that is exceptionally good at reforesting disturbed soils hence making this the most widely distributed tree in North America. This tree can often be seen along roadsides and old fields, forming large stands of clones if not managed. For example, in the state of Utah is a grove of quaking aspen clones named Pando which spans 106 acres and is 9,000 years old. This tree is an important fiber source and its wood is most used as paneling, furniture components, and flooring. It’s white bark and brilliant yellow fall color make it a common landscaping tree. The bark, buds, new sprouts, twigs from the tops of fallen or logged trees, and fallen leaves all are wildlife foods – hare, black bear, white-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, woodcock, small mammals and birds. It is especially important to ruffed grouse who use this tree for brooding, overwintering, breeding, nesting cover, and as a winter food source.
