Highbush blueberry is a medium-sized (6-12 ft tall) widespread blueberry-producing shrub in eastern North America. This native species has more than 50 cultivars focused on different fruit characteristics and seasonality. Their sweet, juicy, blue-black berry can be eaten raw, dried, boiled, or baked. As well as being valued for their berries by humans, they are also used in landscaping in wet areas and to attract wildlife. Highbush blueberries are an important summer and early fall food, preferred by game birds, songbirds, and mammals such as black bear, red fox, cottontail rabbit, skunks, and other small mammals. This shrub is self-fertile but to increase fruit set and produce larger, earlier berries we recommend having multiple shrubs to encourage cross-pollination.
