Hackberry
Celtis occidentalis
Hackberry is a unique looking tree which produces edible fruit. It is often found to be a bottomland species, however it can also be found on hillsides. It can thrive in shady sites and will send out deep roots which make it less susceptible to drought. Many mammals and birds enjoy its berries throughout the winter, including turkey, woodpeckers, grouse, cedar waxwing, and robins. Its bark is easily recognized due to its grey and lumpy appearance. The berries are said to taste like dates. Additionally, hackberry is a larval host plant for multiple species of butterflies and moths.
