Black willow is a fast-growing, short-lived (65 years), and water-loving tree, although it can tolerate drier soils with reduced vigor. This large willow does very well in moist or wet soils or along waterbodies, making it a nice fine-textured tree to add character, soil stability, and flood protection to a pond, stream, or even wet areas of a yard or field. However, due to its weak structure and water searching roots it is recommended to plant at least 50 feet from your house and any pipes to avoid any potential issues. Black willow is an important wildlife tree, with edible leaves and twigs which are browsed by beaver, white-tailed deer, and rabbits as well as it being one of the first plants to provide bees with nectar and pollen each spring. The wood of this willow is soft and does not splinter, making it a good choice for furniture, flooring, and shipping containers. The young stems and twigs are flexible enough to be used in basket and woven furniture making.
