Black Spruce
Picea mariana
Black spruce, or “Swamp spruce”, is a fire-dependent species usually found in areas with persistently wet soils. They can grow up to 75 feet tall and provide an important food source and nesting habitat to native birds and butterflies. Its resin can be used to make spruce gum and spruce beer.
