Balsam Fir
Abies balsamea
Balsam fir is a wonderfully fragrant conifer often found on mountaintops in upstate New York. It makes an excellent Christmas tree and is a favorite of many local fauna which use it for shelter and food – including ruffed grouse, squirrel, deer, snowshoe hare, and various songbirds. It can grow well in both wetland and upland plantings, and is tolerant of most acidic soil types.
